Tour Overview

Step into the grandest private estates of Tamil Nadu — the Nattukotai Chettiar mansions of Chettinad. This 4-day immersive journey takes you through the opulent heritage homes of the Nattukkotai Chettiars, the most wealthy merchant community of pre-independence South India, who built palatial mansions adorned with Burmese teak, Italian marble, Belgian glass and Athangudi clay tiles sourced from across the world.

Beyond the architecture, you'll experience the legendary Chettinad cuisine — one of India's most distinctive culinary traditions, defined by stone-ground spices, sun-dried meats, kara kuzhambu gravies and the iconic Kavuni Arisi (black sticky rice pudding). Cook with a local family, explore the antique bazaars of Karaikudi and witness the age-old craft of Athangudi tile-making that colours every mansion floor.

"The cooking class was the highlight of our entire South India trip. We made kara kuzhambu and Kavuni Arisi from scratch — and I've recreated it three times since getting home. The mansion tour with our guide was absolutely extraordinary."

"I had no idea Chettinad was this extraordinary. The scale of the mansions — Belgian glass, Burmese teak, Italian marble — all in remote Tamil Nadu villages. It felt like stepping into another world. Our guide Selvam was exceptional."

"Staying in the heritage mansion was incredible — the smell of the old teak wood, the Athangudi tile floors under my feet in the morning. The antique bazaar in Karaikudi was overwhelming in the best way. Highly recommend adding this to any Tamil Nadu itinerary."

"The village walk at dusk was deeply moving — lamps lit in every doorway, kolam patterns on every threshold. South India Travels arranged everything seamlessly. Will be back to explore more of Tamil Nadu with them."

Chettinad food is known for bold, aromatic spicing — not necessarily fiery hot by default. Our hosts can adjust the spice level for your palate. The cooking class specifically demonstrates how to balance spices, and you'll come away understanding the cuisine's complexity rather than just its heat.
Many of the finest Chettinad mansions are privately owned and are accessible only through knowledgeable local guides with established family relationships — which is exactly what we provide. Our heritage guide ensures respectful, meaningful access to properties that independent travellers simply cannot enter.
Absolutely. While Chettinad cuisine is famous for its non-vegetarian dishes (Chettinad chicken, crab masala), the vegetarian tradition is equally rich — kara kuzhambu, urulai roast, avial and kovaikkai poriyal are all exceptional. Please inform us in advance and our hosts will create an entirely vegetarian cooking experience.
Yes — this tour can be extended with Thanjavur and the Brihadeeswarar Temple (UNESCO), or combined with our Temple Grand Circuit for a full 10-day Tamil Nadu exploration.
